Hi Subinay! Let's start with your journey into the world of design. What sparked your interest in industrial design initially?

My journey into the world of design was shaped not only by the engineering influence of my father and brother but also by the artistic perspective instilled by my mother, who came from an art background. Growing up, our home was adorned with her vibrant paintings and sculptures, showcasing a world of creativity and expression.

My mother's passion for art exposed me to the beauty of aesthetics and the power of visual communication. She taught me to appreciate the subtleties of colour, form, and composition, which became a fundamental aspect of my understanding of design. Her ability to evoke emotions and tell stories through her art inspired me to seek a similar depth in my creative pursuits.

Balancing the technical insights of my father and brother with the artistic sensibilities of my mother, I found myself drawn towards industrial design as a perfect synthesis of these influences. It offered me the opportunity to merge the precision and functionality of engineering with the creativity and emotive qualities of art. This multidimensional approach not only enriched my perspective but also fueled my passion for designing products that are both visually appealing and purposeful.

Today, as I navigate the realm of industrial design, I cherish the diverse influences that have shaped my journey—from the structured problem-solving of engineering to the expressive freedom of art. You have an impressive educational background with degrees from both ArtCenter College of Design and Raffles College of Design and Commerce. How have these experiences shaped your design philosophy?

A

My educational journey through ArtCenter College of Design and Raffles College of Design and Commerce has profoundly shaped my design philosophy, blending rigorous technical training with diverse cultural influences.

ArtCenter College of Design provided me with a foundation rooted in the principles of industrial design. Here, I honed my skills in conceptualization, prototyping, and user-centered design. The emphasis on critical thinking and hands-on experimentation encouraged me to push boundaries and innovate fearlessly. Learning from esteemed faculty and collaborating with talented peers enriched my understanding of design as a holistic process that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal.

At Raffles College of Design and Commerce, I immersed myself in a multicultural environment that broadened my perspective on global design trends and consumer behaviours. Studying alongside students from various backgrounds exposed me to different design philosophies and approaches, fostering a more inclusive and adaptable mindset in my work. The emphasis on cultural diversity and market insights equipped me with the tools to create designs that resonate with diverse audiences worldwide.

Together, these experiences have instilled in me a design philosophy that values both creativity and practicality, cultural sensitivity, and innovation. How do you balance aesthetics and functionality in your designs? Can you provide an example of a project where this balance was particularly challenging?

A

Balancing aesthetics and functionality in design involves creating visually appealing products that are also practical and efficient. This balance requires a deep understanding of the user’s needs and the context in which the product will be used. Functionality ensures that the product performs its intended purpose effectively, while aesthetics enhance the user’s experience and satisfaction.

A project where this balance was particularly challenging is the design of The Tranquil, a seating solution for private and business class airline experiences. The Tranquil can accommodate up to 28 seats with 78 inches of bed space and storage, allowing for quick ingress and egress. The design focuses on luxury, offering passengers a unique and comfortable experience.

One of the primary functional aspects is the rocking chair mechanism, which helps reduce turbulence and provides a massaging, sleep-inducing sensation during the flight. This feature required careful engineering to ensure safety and reliability while maintaining an elegant appearance.

The challenge was to integrate these functionalities seamlessly into a design that exudes luxury and sophistication. By prioritizing both aesthetics and functionality, The Tranquil makes passengers feel pampered and relaxed, embodying the perfect balance between form and function in a business class setting.

You’re known for your strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. Can you walk us through your design thinking process? How do you approach a new project from concept to production?

A

My design thinking process is structured yet flexible, allowing for strategic thinking and effective problem-solving at every stage. Here’s a step-by-step approach from concept to production:

  1. Empathise: I begin by understanding the user’s needs through research and observation. This involves conducting interviews, surveys, and usability studies to gather insights into the user’s experiences and challenges.

  2. Define: I then synthesize the information gathered to define the problem clearly. This stage involves creating user personas and mapping out user journeys to pinpoint the exact issues that need addressing.

  3. Ideate: With a clear problem in mind, I brainstorm potential solutions. I encourage divergent thinking to generate a wide range of ideas, which are then evaluated for feasibility and impact.

  4. Sketch: I create initial sketches to visualize and explore different concepts quickly. Sketching helps refine ideas and communicate them effectively to the team.

  5. Prototype: I develop low-fidelity prototypes from the best sketches to further visualize the concepts. These prototypes can be wireframes or simple models. Additionally, I utilize 3D printing to create high-fidelity prototypes, allowing for detailed exploration of form and function, and enabling quick iterations based on feedback.

  6. Test: The prototypes are tested with users to gather feedback. This stage is crucial for identifying any flaws or areas for improvement. Based on the feedback, I refined the design iteratively.

  7. Detailing: I pay close attention to the colour, material, and finish (CMF) of the product, whether digital or physical. This involves selecting the right materials and finishes that enhance the product's aesthetics and functionality, ensuring a cohesive and appealing final design.

  8. Implement: Once the design is validated, I move to production. This involves detailed design specifications, collaboration with engineers, and overseeing the manufacturing process to ensure the final product meets the intended design and functionality.

Throughout this process, strategic thinking helps me align the design with business goals, while problem-solving ensures practical and human-centred solutions.

You’ve worked in various global markets, including Australia, Singapore, and the USA. How have these experiences influenced your design approach?

A

Working in various global markets, such as the USA, China, Australia, and Singapore, has profoundly influenced my design approach by instilling a diverse and adaptable mindset. Each market presents unique cultural nuances, consumer behaviours, and aesthetic preferences that necessitate a flexible and context-sensitive approach to design.

My Master of Science from the Art Center College of Design in California has been a significant driver in my journey of travelling and working globally. The program emphasized innovation, user-centred design, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, laying a strong foundation for my international experiences.

In the USA, the vast and varied market demands a deep understanding of regional preferences and trends. The fast-paced, innovation-driven environment has pushed me to stay ahead of the curve, incorporating cutting-edge technology and forward-thinking aesthetics. This experience has reinforced the importance of user-centred design, where understanding the end user's needs and behaviours is paramount.

China, with its intense manufacturing landscape and detailed process-oriented approach, has highlighted the significance of precision and scalability in design. Working closely with manufacturers has enhanced my ability to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also feasible and cost-effective to produce on a large scale.

In Australia, the emphasis on sustainability and a strong connection to nature has taught me the importance of integrating eco-friendly materials and biophilic design elements. The Australian market values open, airy spaces that promote well-being, influencing my preference for minimalist yet functional designs.

Singapore, with its dense urban environment and multicultural population, has underscored the need for space-efficient, multifunctional designs. The city's blend of Eastern and Western influences has also encouraged me to incorporate a mix of traditional and contemporary elements, creating designs that resonate with a diverse audience.

Meeting diverse people with intense expertise in different fields of design and engineering has further enriched my approach. Collaborating with experts in various disciplines has broadened my perspective, allowing me to incorporate innovative techniques and solutions into my designs. This interdisciplinary exchange has fostered creativity and driven me to push the boundaries of traditional design.

Overall, these experiences have enriched my design approach, making it more holistic, versatile, and attuned to the subtleties of different cultural contexts.

Collaboration is essential in product design. How do you work with cross-functional teams to ensure successful outcomes?

To ensure successful outcomes, I emphasize clear communication and mutual respect for diverse expertise. At the outset, I initiate collaborative efforts by conducting team meetings where each member shares their insights and perspectives. This fosters a shared understanding of project goals and allows for early identification of potential challenges.

I believe in leveraging each team member's strengths, whether they come from engineering, marketing, or user experience backgrounds. This approach ensures that all aspects of the product, from functionality to user interface, are considered comprehensively. Regular checkpoints and milestones are established to review progress and gather feedback, promoting transparency and accountability across the team.

In addition, I encourage lots of quick Post-it sketches during brainstorming sessions. These sketches help visualize ideas rapidly and encourage spontaneous contributions from team members. They serve as tangible starting points for discussions and iterations, facilitating a dynamic exchange of ideas.

By fostering an environment of open communication, mutual respect, and creative collaboration, cross-functional teams can effectively harness their collective expertise to deliver innovative and user-centric product designs.

Rhinoceros are 3D empowers me to create intricate 3D models with precision, leveraging its parametric modelling capabilities through plug-ins like Grasshopper for iterative design refinements. Blender complements this by offering robust features for animation, rendering, and sculpting, allowing for dynamic presentations and simulations of product functionalities.

Keyshot enhances my ability to produce high-fidelity renderings that showcase realistic material finishes and lighting effects, crucial for conveying design aesthetics effectively. Integrating virtual reality into my workflow enables me to visualize designs in real dimensions, providing immersive experiences that highlight spatial relationships and ergonomic considerations.

Together, these tools have revolutionized my approach to design, facilitating seamless transitions from initial concept exploration to detailed modelling and realistic visualization. UX/UI design is pivotal in my work, ensuring products are not only functional but also intuitive and engaging for users. To achieve this, I begin by thoroughly understanding user needs through research and user testing. This informs the design process, focusing on creating clear user interfaces and seamless interactions. Iterative prototyping allows for refining designs based on user feedback, ensuring usability remains a priority.

Looking forward, the future of UX/UI design in industrial products is poised for advancements in several key areas. One trend is enhanced personalization, where products adapt to individual user preferences and behaviours. AI and machine learning will play a crucial role in this evolution, predicting user actions and customizing interfaces in real time.

Moreover, the future will likely see a deeper correlation between physical and digital products. Integrating sensors and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies into industrial products will enable them to collect data on usage patterns and user behaviour. This data can then inform UX/UI design decisions, ensuring that both physical and digital aspects of the product work harmoniously to enhance user experience.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career as an industrial designer, and how did you overcome them?

Throughout my career as an industrial designer, I've encountered several significant challenges that have shaped my approach and resilience. Designing during the COVID-19 era presented unprecedented obstacles, such as remote collaboration and disrupted supply chains. To adapt, I leveraged virtual collaboration tools extensively and maintained frequent communication with team members and clients, ensuring projects stayed on track despite global disruptions.

Designing in China demanded meticulous attention to detail due to cultural nuances and manufacturing complexities. Overcoming this challenge involved building strong relationships with local partners, conducting thorough research, and making on-site visits to ensure design specifications were accurately interpreted and executed.

Designing for the elderly posed unique challenges where understanding human psychology and physical limitations was crucial. I tackled this by conducting empathetic research, engaging directly with elderly users for insights, and iterating designs based on their feedback to create products that catered to their specific needs effectively.

Each challenge has reinforced my problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to diverse contexts, ultimately enhancing my capabilities as an industrial designer. These experiences have underscored the importance of empathy, communication, and meticulous attention to detail in delivering impactful and user-centric design solutions.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring designers who are just starting their journey in the field of industrial design?

A

To aspiring designers embarking on their journey in industrial design, I would offer several pieces of advice to guide their path:

Firstly, immerse yourself in diverse design inspirations—from nature to everyday objects— and cultivate a curiosity for how things work and why they work that way. This broad perspective will enrich your creative process and problem-solving abilities.

Secondly, embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and improve. Design is iterative, and each iteration brings you closer to a refined solution. Don't be afraid to experiment and take risks in your designs.

Thirdly, developed strong technical skills in 3D modelling, rendering, and prototyping tools. These skills will enable you to effectively communicate your ideas and bring them to life, whether through digital simulations or physical prototypes.

Additionally, embrace the use of AI as a tool that can enhance various aspects of design and marketing. AI technologies can assist in data analysis, predictive modelling, and even creative tasks like generating design variations or optimizing user experiences.
