The Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the heritage of the 1924 French Games while propelling Paris and the spirit of Olympism into the 21st century. Conran Design Group has masterfully embraced this challenge, creating a brand that not only honours the past but also paves the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
For Paris 2024, Conran Design Group needed to achieve three key objectives:
Embrace the societal role of the Games
Celebrate the Parisian legacy of the 1924 event
and propel Paris into the 21st century
This task was about leveraging the essence of what defines Paris and France while also creating something unprecedented – a grand spectacle that prioritizes legacy and environmental impact.
The slogan ‘Games Wide Open’ perfectly captures Paris 2024’s commitment to inclusivity and openness, inviting the world to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event. Beyond just a slogan, the visual identity of the Games incorporates sports-themed symbols inspired by heraldry, celebrating the unity of fans, Olympians, and Paralympians.
The brand’s mascot, the Phryges, highlights inclusivity by honouring people with disabilities. Inspired by the Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom and unity, these gender-neutral mascots emphasise the collaborative spirit of the Games with their motto – ‘Alone we go faster, but together we go further.’
Conran Design Group’s design approach blends tradition with modernity to promote a sense of community among participants and spectators. The emblem-style pictograms, each representing one of the 47 sports disciplines in the Paris 2024 program, are a testament to this. With eight pictograms shared across the Olympic and Paralympic Games, these visual aids transform into powerful emblems of pride and communal identity.
